Room 103 – Mary Sanborn

Dear Students and Families,

Welcome to Room 103! This year, the students will work in literacy centers focusing on math and language arts skills. In our classroom, we use a multimodal approach in order for the students to engage in various styles of learning. During centers, technology, social interaction and hands-on activities are infused to provide opportunities for the students to experience the content in ways that best connect with their individual abilities and needs.

In Social Studies, we will learn about multiple cultures and traditions by studying holidays such as Rosh Hashanah, Diwali, Hanukkah and Christmas through interactive groups. We will explore the origin and meaning behind various aspects of each holiday. At the end of each lesson, the students will listen to songs and complete a craft relating to the holiday. Our class will also learn about their own roots by creating family trees. During our Social Studies groups, we will learn about community helpers, community signs and various modes of transportation throughout the year.

In Science, the students will engage in hands-on activities focusing on each season. The students will participate in interactive lessons to discover how we experience the season using our five senses – touch, taste, sight, sound and smell. In the Spring, we will be reading the story The Very Hungry Caterpillar as we study the life cycle of a butterfly. We will also explore the plant life cycle by tracking the growth of flowers we plant ourselves!

While on Community-Based Instruction, we will visit a variety of locations including Target, Shop-Rite and Barnes & Noble to generalize and transfer the skills we are working on in the classroom.

We are so excited to learn, explore, discover and grow together!
