Room 112 – Rachel Guzzo

Dear Students and Families,

Welcome to Classroom 112!

The students in 112 focus on functional life skills that they will use in life beyond the classroom. They work on a wide range of life centered activities that utilize the dorm room and laundry room to practice folding, sorting and hanging clothes; making a bed; cleaning tables and windows; and vacuuming. In the kitchen, students also practice making snacks using bake and no bake recipes. They practice using measuring cups, whisking and mixing, and following step by step directions.

During our Community-Based Instruction (CBI), the students will practice skills needed out in the community such as, identifying and purchasing items needed for recipes. They will identify and find different items in the stores based on individual shopping lists. The students will also pay for orders and receive change for purchases. CBI locations include trips to stores such as Target, Stop and Shop, Dollar Tree and even trips to the Paramus Park Mall later in the year.

Classroom 112 will also work closely with Classroom 111 for Social Studies and Science groups. During these groups the students will explore different current events and learn about holidays and/or special events celebrated in different cultures throughout the year. Discussions will also include types of weather during the different seasons and the appropriate attire for each, as well as, conserving the environment by discussing what materials are garbage versus recycling.

In Classroom 112 we encourage students to work as independently as possible with the support of the staff when needed.  We want our students to succeed and we celebrate each success! I am excited to work with each and every student and partner with their parents/guardians!
