Dear Students and Families,
Welcome to Classroom 112!
In Classroom 112, the goal is for each student is to follow their Individualized Education Program (IEP), which focuses on functional life skills as well as academics to help prepare for success beyond the classroom. Additionally students will be exploring the importance of different holidays and cultures, taking care of our community by recycling and practicing social skills by taking turns and working together as a team.
Some functional activities that will be a focus are folding, sorting and hanging clothes; stocking shelves; preparing meals; and shopping. Along with this, students will be given the opportunity to sort gift cards, sort money, identify coupons, match items and prices, and prepare their own wallets to get ready for Community Based Instruction trips.
Classroom 112 will participate in Community Based Instruction twice a week during the school year. During this time, we will visit locations such as Dollar General, Target, Stop and Shop, Burger King, Chick-Fil-A, and the Paramus Park Mall (later in the school year). While on our trips, students will be finding items from picture supported shopping lists, communicating their wants/needs, ordering from adapted menus, and following simple two or three step directions. Our focus on functional activities as well as communication and teamwork are to help students succeed inside and outside of the classroom!
I look forward to working with you and collaborating on the best ways to practice and generalize lessons learned in the classroom. Maintaining open lines of communication is key to student success. If you have any questions or concerns you can email me, write in the daily Home-School Communication book or call 973-542-0743 (x112) between 8 and 8:30 or between 2:45 and 3.
Once again, welcome to Classroom 112! I look forward to hearing from you and for a successful, fun-filled school year!
