We are proud to share that Beth Miele, Teacher, Behavior Coordinator, and IT Coordinator at The Phoenix Center, was recently featured in an opinion piece published by NorthJersey.com titled, “What My Students With Autism Have Taught Me.”

In this thoughtful and deeply personal article, Beth reflects on the lessons she has learned over 35 years of teaching students with autism. Drawing from decades of classroom experience, she shares powerful insights about communication, trust, patience, and the importance of seeing every child as an individual with unique strengths and needs.

Beth writes about how behavior is often a form of communication, why nonverbal students should never be underestimated, and how consistency and structure create the foundation for learning and trust. She also highlights the importance of recognizing progress in all forms, especially the meaningful milestones that may look different from traditional expectations but carry tremendous significance for students and their families.
