A Leap of Faith
Our co-founders, Dr. Geraldine A. Gibbia, Ph.D. and Dr. Douglas Berrian, Ed.D., took a leap of faith more than three decades ago. Believing deeply in the potential of every child, they mortgaged their own homes to create a school where students who needed a specialized environment could feel welcomed, valued, and truly seen.
From the very beginning, the vision was clear: a school that embraces the whole child—nurturing strengths while providing the support needed to overcome challenges.
Growing Into a Thriving Community
What began with just 16 students has grown into a vibrant community of nearly 140. Today, The Phoenix Center continues to deliver customized, evidence-based programs and services that meet the educational, behavioral, and therapeutic needs of each student.
For parents, the journey has been equally powerful. Many arrived uncertain about their child’s future, only to witness transformations they never thought possible: a non-verbal child finding their voice, a graduate stepping into meaningful employment, a family seeing their child thrive with independence.
These successes embody the spirit and purpose of The Phoenix Center: transforming lives and opening doors of opportunity.
