Brewing Independence, One Iced Coffee at a Time
Meet the students turning weekly coffee orders into hands-on opportunities to build communication, vocational skills, confidence and independence.

There is a lot more brewing at The Phoenix Center than coffee.
What started with one student’s love for iced coffee and Dunkin’ has grown into the Brew Crew, a collaborative vocational program where students take orders, prepare drinks, make deliveries and build meaningful real-world skills along the way.
Each week, our students are practicing communication, teamwork, problem-solving, responsibility and independence, all through an experience built around their own interests and strengths.
And the best part? Every order is an opportunity to build confidence and greater independence.
From an Interest to an Idea
Turning that initial interest into the Brew Crew didn’t happen overnight.
Over the course of a year, students and staff worked together to develop what is now a collaborative vocational program made up of 10 to 12 Phoenix Center students and co-led by our Speech and Occupational Therapists.
Students were involved from the beginning. They helped decide what they wanted to make and sell, identified the ingredients and materials they would need, and participated in developing customized order forms designed to help students at different levels independently read, interpret and complete each order.
What began with one student’s interest became an opportunity for many students to learn together.
A Week with the Brew Crew
Each week, students take coffee orders from TPC staff, collect and organize the order forms, and get to work.
Using an assembly-line approach, Brew Crew members follow individual orders, measure ingredients, prepare drinks and work together to keep everything moving. Once the coffees are ready, students personally deliver them to staff members throughout the building.

And the Brew Crew has already expanded beyond its regular weekly service. At our Spring Concert, students set up shop and sold pre-made drinks to families and guests.
Each step creates another opportunity to practice skills in a real setting, with real customers and a real finished product students can be proud of.
Why It Matters
The Brew Crew is fun. It is also real work.
With every order, students practice communication, social interaction, sequencing, following directions, teamwork, fine motor skills, money concepts, problem-solving, executive functioning and vocational readiness.
But some of the most meaningful progress is harder to put on a checklist.

We see students taking ownership of their work. We see pride when a drink is completed and delivered. We see connections being made with staff members throughout the building. And we see confidence grow as students become more comfortable doing more for themselves.
It is a wonderful example of what can happen when we start with a student’s interests and strengths and build meaningful learning around them.
That is what preparing students for life beyond the classroom can look like.
The Brew Crew Makes the News
The Brew Crew’s hard work recently caught the attention of local media!
In celebration of National Coffee Day on September 29, NorthJersey.com photojournalist Michael Karas visited The Phoenix Center to capture students preparing iced coffees, working alongside staff and therapists, and making deliveries throughout the school.
The Brew Crew’s story also made its way to television, with News 12 New Jersey highlighting how the program helps students build practical job skills and independence.
We’re grateful to both news outlets for helping share our students’ accomplishments with the wider community.
