The Brew Crew Featured by NorthJersey.com for National Coffee Day

We are proud to share that The Phoenix Center’s Brew Crew was recently featured by NorthJersey.com in a photo gallery titled “Take a look as students at The Phoenix Center make iced coffee.”

Just in time for National Coffee Day on September 29, NorthJersey.com photojournalist Michael Karas visited The Phoenix Center to see the Brew Crew in action. His photos capture our students preparing iced coffees on an assembly line, working alongside staff and therapists, and delivering drinks throughout the building.

The Brew Crew is a student-led vocational program co-led by our Speech and Occupational Therapists. What started with one student’s love for iced coffee and Dunkin’ has grown into a weekly program where students take staff orders, prepare drinks and make deliveries. Along the way they build communication, teamwork, sequencing, money concepts, problem-solving and vocational readiness skills.

With National Coffee Day on September 29 and International Coffee Day on October 1, it was a fitting week for our students to share their work with the wider community.

At The Phoenix Center, we are always looking for ways to build learning around our students’ interests and strengths, and the Brew Crew is a wonderful example of what preparing students for life beyond the classroom can look like. Thank you to Michael Karas and NorthJersey.com for spending time with our students and helping share their story.
